Charlie Mars
Charlie Mars – vocals, acoustic guitar, harmonica
Record Date: September 25, 2015
Singer songwriter Charlie Mars brought his acoustic guitar and slow infectious groove into Overit Studios to film an episode of Sessions at Overit on September 25th. Charlie performed songs off his latest release The Money (Rockingham Records/Thirty Tigers), recorded at Sonic Ranch just outside El Paso Texas, produced by Billy Harvey, and shared his unique comedy with an intimate private audience.
The Oxford, Mississippi native has had his songs featured on television shows like How I met Your Mother, Bones, HBO’s Weeds starring ex-girlfriend Mary-Louise Parker, Parenthood and others.
With no shortage of creative songwriting tricks, he and several artists like Jason Mraz and Bob Schneider play a songwriting game. Someone picks a word and they all incorporate it into a new song, some of which have gone on to be commercial hits.
In 2010 Charlie pitched a version of the game to Esquire Magazine. The result is Dierks Bentley, Bob Schneider, Griffin House, and Ben Kweller together at the Shack-Up Inn in Clarksdale, Mississippi. Along with world-famous photographer Danny Clinch and his camera, the group participated in a two day fashion shoot while each musician wrote, performed, and recorded an original song with lyrics that included the phrase “Somewhere in Mississippi.” This idea turned into Esquire’s Songwriting Challenge.
We are thrilled to have captured excellent audio and video during Charlie’s visit. We hope you enjoy this episode of Sessions at Overit!
