I want to talk about importing an AAF file into Pro Tools. And just so you know I haven’t done this in at least 10 years, maybe longer! It’s usually an OMF file but let’s figure out if I can actually do this or not together!

Hey everybody welcome back to breakingaudio i am adam claremont forbreakingaudio.com andadamclermont.com today i want to talkaboutimporting an aaf file into pro toolsand just so you know i haven’t done thisin at least 10 years maybe longer it’susually an omf file butlet’s figure out if i can actually dothis or nottogether so we’ll see so if you likevideosjust like this be sure to hit thatsubscribe button hit the notificationbell so youdon’t miss any videos every week we’rereleasing themuh it’s just like this pro tools tipsableton tips just how to be a betterengineerworking in the studio so please uh itmeans the world to me hit the subscribebuttonhelp us out and uh yeah let’s just divein and see what happens herehey so here we are this is my 5 1templateuh i am beginning a short film todayuh called the vow and i was delivered anaaf fileand i mean really it’s no big deal it’sthe same thing as an omf reallyand it imports the same way so i’m justgoing to show you how i’m about to dothat so i can get started uhon this project today so first thingsfirsti’m going to go to file import sessiondataall right and what i’ve done is i’ve gota folderwhere i um just organize i’ve got a filefor all my video assetsas things change i’ll load all thosevideo files in hereand i just like to create a file afolder forthe files that were delivered to me fromthe client exactly as they wereso that’s what this is so this is thatwhole folder that i’ll be importingso i’m going to grab the aaf right hereclick openand see what we got here so first thingi want to check out is the sourceproperties this is going to tell meyou know it’s an af file it’s going totell me where it starts in the timelineso we’re starting at an hour uh the timecode format which is very importantso i’ll probably need to change this inpro tools to 24 frames per secondthe bit depth is good to know the samplerate is also good to know the types offilesand the video frame rate like imentioned good to know so that all lookscool to meand then let’s check out some of theother options we have here so undermedia options we’re going to look at ouraudio and our video media optionsso if you hit this drop down menu we’vegot fouroptions i’ll just go over these and tellyou what i’m going to use so we havelink to source media where possible sowhat this would do is instead of copyingall the data into your project you’regoing totell the project file to locatethe source media wherever it lives andjust use that data from this thelocation where it already livescopying the source media takes all ofthe media wherever it lives and putsinto the newaudio files folder the pro toolsautomatically generates for everypro tools project session consolidatefrom source mediasame thing is copy from source mediaexcept thatand this is very important to know thedifference consolidate will literallynot copy any files that aren’t currentlyusedin the project so maybe alternate takesor other takesin your film or any audio that was usedand since removedit doesn’t mean that you won’t need itit just means it’s not in the projectbut byconsolidating it it means it’s not goingto be available to youso important to know that and then forceto target session format when you copyit basically you’re going to takewhateveryou know if this is at 441 in yoursessions at 48 it’s going to turn it to48.okay so for me i just showed you that imade that folderwith all of my client files so it’salready in my project folderi’m just going to use link to sourcemedia because it’s right there i don’tneed to copy it againso i’m going to use link to source mediavideo media options you have two optionsherelink to source media or copy from sourcemedia once againi’m just going to link because i createda video files folderit’s already in my project so i’m goingto linktime code mapping options we have threeoptionsmaintain absolute time code valuesmeaningif this starts at one hour it’s going tostart at one hour in my session when iimport itsimple make sense maintain relative timecode valuesif this starts at one hour and allsubsequentaudio files start wherever they startthe relative timeline will stay intactbut it will begin wherever my sessionbeginsand currently my session begins at zerookay so if i were to choose thiseverything would start at zero and thenit would all follow mine just as it wasuh as it’s supposed to play okay mapstart timecode to if i click it makes more senseinto whatever you say sothis is kind of like maintain therelative but instead of it starting atthe beginning of my session i’m going tosay let’s saystart at five hours so now it will startat five hours instead of one hour andthen after five hours it will allyou know fall in line the way it was andthen the last thing here is track offsetso what i could dois i could start it at five hours buti’m going to offset it byfive minutes this is useful maybe forlike conform so if there’s an edit andyou’ve got some files coming in you cansort of conform them back into yoursessioni don’t want to touch it today that getscrazyi’m going to stick with absolute sowe’ll stick with the start timebeginning at one hour makes sense to meum another thing we’re going to look athere sample rate conversion options ifwe are copyingand there is a different sample ratefrom the sourceproperties the source data and yourcurrentsession like let’s say my session’s at98 then i would hit this and we wouldchangeall the data coming in would beconverted from 48to 96 okay so i don’t need to do thattodayuh here i want everything selected as anew track i couldyou know i could send these things toyou know my current template i’m notgoing to do thatmaybe that’s for another video why iwon’t do thatsession data to import i’m i personallydon’tlike to take any of this stuff here andlet’s just check out everything herebecause it’s a new track i’m just goingto takeeverything here if i was bringing theseonto my template i would be unchecking alot of things because my templateis created so that i’m already workingthe way that i want to begin to work andif i were to take this dataand place the new tracks intothese tracks then my template would bescrewed upbased on however the initial data wascreated in the initialsession so it’s kind ofcounterproductive so i’m gonna make anew track i’m still gonna take all thisstuff so i can see itbut it’ll just be on a new track solet’s justclick okay see what we got that soundsfine to meand this is why we have coffee so whilewe waitoh look at that there’s just a few filesthat’s niceso anyway there you have it this is myfilmnicely done i’m impressed this looksreally nicely edited andreally simple for me to get started withsoyou know from here i’m just going tobegin toput these down into my template and iwill begin to get to workso there you have it i hope that washelpful if you’ve ever received an affile and you’veonly ever worked with omf files fear notyou see how simple it was it’s literallythe exact same processum you know i was gave you a cliffhangerin the beginning soif you stuck around thanks uh now youknowum if you have any questions pleaseleave them in the comment i’d be
